DWR Ongoing Development

esslawrence
Hello --
I'm in the process of making stack recommendations at the company I work for. My prototyping team has had significant success with DWR 2. I've seen activity on the Bamboo server, but before making recommendations (or at least caveating them as appropriate), I would like to know if there is any plan (concrete or otherwise) for a release of 3.0 and continued support of 2.0. This is not in any way an indictment of the development process -- DWR is a fantastic tool -- but as part of due diligence I am expected to note the level of supportability a solution has in terms of first party development as well as community.

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

We do not have concrete plans for 3.0. We have a very small team and try
our best but it is difficult to provide accurate estimates given time
constraints.  I do feel that we provide good support.  We try to respond
to every post on the list promptly and generally respond to and fix
issues quickly.

David -- thanks very much for the timely response. I can completely understand the constraints, and appreciate your candor. And everything I've read corroborates the good support claim.

Re: DWR Ongoing Development

Matt Conroy
Just to throw out my 2 cents. DWR is one if the most solid libraries that I have ever used. Our dev team has been using the latest development builds for all of our production remoting products for the last 2 years. During this time we had one issue after updating to a newer build and after reporting the issue it was fixed the same day. Kudos to David, Mike, and company on the excellent support and solid product. So I would personally recommend using the latest release candidate of version 3 in newer projects, but can't speak too much on upgrading from 2.0 since I got on the train during version 3 development, but I'm guessing the upgrade would be fairly clean.

If worse comes to worse just let the business know that development will stop without DWR ;)

How extensive is the testing that you do before releasing changes to the 3.0 baseline?

Re: DWR Ongoing Development

david@butterdev.com
We have a series of JUnit tests as well as a test web application
(available on svn - testdwr) that runs through several hundred tests and
provide good coverage of core DWR functionality.  We are currently weak
in the Reverse AJAX area.
